On the opening track of GREATEST HITS, "3/5 Mile in 10 Seconds," singer Marty Balin requests "let's pretend it's 1967." The band answers the call, keeping the flower-power spirit alive with faithful renditions of Airplane and Starship classics. The album, which is a great return to a bygone era, was recorded at the Fillmore, San Francisco, in 1998, with a lineup that features original members Balin, Paul Kantner, and Jack Casady. Grace Slick replacement Diana Mangano serves up spirited vocals on "Somebody to Love." Kantner reminds the crowd that "It's No Secret" was one of the first songs they played on the Fillmore stage moments before launching into an energized version, with Marty Balin's vocals as strong as ever. Prairie Prince's drumming is powerful and precise on "The Light." "White Rabbit" is as surreal as ever, and features Jack Casady's thumping bassline. A seven-minute version of "Miracles" features some vocal ad libbing by Balin and jamming by the band. Although the revolutionary theme of the Airplane classic "Volunteers" may no longer apply, the band rocks just as hard on the track. GREATEST HITS shows the Airplane and Starship are both still flying high.
