Kate Wolf & The Wildwood Flower: Kate Wolf (vocals, guitar); Don Coffin (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, background vocals); Davis West (guitar, background vocals); Will Seigel (dobro, banjo, background vocals); Paul Ellis (fiddle); "Pete" Wiseman (acoustic bass). Kate Wolf's first solo album--her first, 1973's BREEZES, is a collaboration on which Wolf wrote the music and occasionally sings--is credited to Kate Wolf and the Wildwood Flower, a short-lived, bluegrass-influenced group somewhere between SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO-era Byrds and Alison Krauss's group Union Station two decades later. Self-released on her own Owl Records imprint, BACK ROADS is a remarkably self-assured and satisfying folk album with just enough country, bluegrass, and pop touches to make it sound like the work of a much more experienced singer-songwriter. The moving parable "The Redtail Hawk" and the tender ballads "Lately" and "Telluride" are closest to the hushed intimacy of her later albums, but the sassy "Sitting on the Porch" and "Tequila and Me" are more rollicking joys. "Legend in His Time" is dedicated to the late Gram Parsons.

商品の紹介

Dirty Linen (p.50) - "It has a strong, sometimes rough-hewn, bluegrass-country feel..."
Rovi

Wolf's debut album introduced an approach that would, in most essential respects, vary little over the next decade: gentle, slightly mournful country/folk songs with a strong narrative voice, and a semi-rural Californian ambience with the frequent evocation of golden, natural landscapes. Even at this stage, Wolf stood out from the pack with her restrained, tasteful vocals, sincere compositions that avoided maudlin cliches, and careful, almost diligent arrangements. ~ Richie Unterberger
