Recorded at Real Music Studios, Silver Lake, California in 2002.
The Athens, Georgia, singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt carved a substantial niche for himself throughout the 1990s with a series of perfectly formed if eccentrically realized albums that were variously wrathful and slyly off-kilter. Recorded in 2003, this similarly wry collection of deftly drawn songs is abetted by a sensitive collection of sidemen, who color them with whispered musical accents and distant, archaic-sounding percussion, as well as supporting them with catchy-sounding riffs when the occasion demands.
Chesnutt's wide-ranging lyrical imagination is much in evidence on songs that encompass a eunuch's intercessions between a sultan and his undeserved harem ("Sultan, So Mighty"); a juvenile romance at band camp ("Band Camp"); an unrealized affair with a fellow hospital patient (Fa-La-La"); and the endearingly antisocial entreaty of "Stay Inside." The whole album is a succession of expertly told short stories that aim to bewitch the listener, and--like the best tales--reveal a little more each time they're told.
