The Art Of Noise: Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik, Gary Langan.
Originally released in 1986 on Chrysalis (41528).
Photographer: Peter Ashworth.
Arranger: The Art of Noise.
IN VISIBLE SILENCE, the Art of Noise's second full-length album, was their first release after splitting with Trevor Horn and ZTT Records in 1985. Since in the minds of many, Horn was the Art of Noise's guiding inspiration, little was initially expected of the slimmed-down lineup of Anne Dudley, J.J. Jeczalik and Gary Langan. Three hit singles later, this view was modified.
Earlier Art of Noise releases occasionally suffered from a lack of structural integrity, with many of the pieces seeming like underdeveloped fragments. SILENCE works well as a unified whole, supported by the quirky and engaing hits--"Legs," the Duane Eddy collaboration "Peter Gunn" and "Paranoimia," the single remix of which featured the voice of Canadian actor Matt Frewer in his role of Max Headroom. In particular, "Camilla," "Opus 4" and the downright menacing "Instruments of Darkness" are fully-realized pieces, almost classical in their structure.
