Matt Chicoine brings a refreshing new sound to Detroit's estimable Planet E label with his debut EP, SO THIS IS THE DINING ROOM. Jazzed-up, scratch-and-breakbeat laden tracks such as "Welcome" and "Dislocate" break tradition with Detroit's anti-drum-and-bass establishment, sounding more like the metajazztastic productions of Ninja Tunes' Amon Tobin. But "Dencity" and "Mym230 (R.I.P.)," both mixed by Planet E majordomo Carl Craig, offer more of a tasty compromise between Recloose's trippy production wiles and Craig's brand of moody, piano-stoked techno melancholia. "Mym230 (R.I.P.)" even pays service to the unwavering kick-drum of Detroit's future-jazz template while trailing ribbons of synth, sax, and filleted vocal samples and expanding into an intricate groove.
