Looking back now, one feels almost certain that, given enough time to develop over the course of a few albums, Fist had all the makings of a New Wave of British Heavy Metal success story -- not one of its disappointing failures. But, because they were unfortunate enough to land on MCA (nicknamed "Musical Cemetery of America" for their complete ineptness at promoting hard rock talent) rather than a more patient and career-driven record company, the band was doomed to obscurity instead. By the release of their sophomore album, 1982's Back With a Vengeance (confusingly kicked off by a track named after their first album), Fist were back with the far more supportive, but hopelessly under-funded, Neat Records, and despite also dealing with a significantly re-tooled lineup, it's fair to say that they once again topped everyone's modest expectations. Though slightly more simplistic in their approach (that's "commercially accessible," in record company speak), new offerings like "Too Hot," "Devil Rise," and even the seven-minute mini-epic "Lost and Found," stood on relatively equal footing with the band's earlier songwriting efforts (as well as contemporary acts like Tygers of Pan Tang); replacing whatever they'd lost in terms of rough charm with a far more professional sheen. As well as making for a highly ironic development considering Fist had recently taken the inverse route from major label to indie, their ability to "make things work" (driven home by their successful re-recording of first demo "S.S Gyro" -- a rare feat for rehashed N.W.O.B.H.M. singles) shows further evidence of the band's unfulfilled potential despite their well-established identity. Sure enough, as fate would have it, Fist would never have that opportunity, and subsequent setbacks resulted in Back With a Vengeance being their final release. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
