Appaloosa: Ben McColl, Matthew Brooks. Recording information: Bournmouth, England (1995-1999). Photographer: JT. Appaloosa's debut full-length, including tracks recorded between 1995 and 1999, appeared not on an L.T.J Bukem-associated label but on Rockers Hi-Fi's Different Drummer. Though nominally tied to midtempo drum'n'bass and a reliance on polished productions, the Appaloosa sound is all over the map -- certainly compared with most of the artists associated with Bukem's one-note fusion camp. From menacing android effects on the highlight, "tpK," to a fascinating fusion of tribal house and electro on "Independence" and "Crocodile Chrome," Appaloosa ranges through all manner of earthy and more technical sounds across its ten tracks. It's obvious that McColl and Brooks are excellent, inventive producers, rarely content to let the same percussion program or effects line run unassisted for more than a few seconds. And despite the constant quest for new sounds, the album never feels forced. ~ John Bush
