Named for one of the most remote, inaccessible islands in the world, Deathprod's second album, Imaginary Songs from Tristan da Cunha, is a study in isolation. The album's first four tracks are brief, eerie pieces recorded to phonographic wax cylinders, with Ole Henrik Moe's ghostly violin creaking out from underneath Helge Sten's flickering "audio virus." While intriguing, the pieces barely seem like they're there, and don't leave nearly as much of an impression as "The Contraceptive Briefcase II," the half-hour epic that takes up the rest of the album. Recorded in concert by the Norwegian Broadcast Corporation, the composition introduces vocals to the Deathprod sound, with five phantasmal voices surrounded by Sten's pulsating drones. Moe's violin remains scratchy and unnerving, and this time it's joined by Sten's glorious theremin playing, as well as some sort of glass instruments played by the choir. The piece doesn't make a whole lot of progression, but it does reach some sort of climax during its final third. ~ Paul Simpson
