Recording information: 1972-1975.
The first Acid Daze compilation covered Hawkwind's later years, attempting to collect key cuts and rarities from an often-diffuse era. Volume two concentrates on what many consider Hawkwind's classic age, the period between 1972-1975, an era when the band released its most influential music and its lineup contained key members Nik Turner, Bob Calvert, Del Dettmar, and most famously, Lemmy. In keeping with the pattern of volume one, the album eschews hits for rarities and album cuts. "Silver Machine" and "Kings of Speed," two of the biggest hits Hawkwind had during this time, are absent. Instead, the compilation includes "Kings"' B-side, "Motorhead," which Lemmy later put to good use fronting his own band, as well as a live version of "You Shouldn't Do That" (here called "Watchfield Festival") and "Magnu," a superb album track from Warrior on the Edge of Time. Unfortunately, as is the case with the first Acid Daze set, the versions here are mostly live versions rather than the original studio recordings, which means that this is not exactly the best way to hear some of these cuts. What's more, by using live versions from shows recorded later, the compilation manages to squeeze in ringers like "Angels of Death" (from 1981) and "Hash Cake '77." Still, there are many rare tracks from this era, which gives Acid Daze, Vol. 2 a slight edge over its predecessor. ~ Victor W. Valdivia
