Progressive rock superstar Greg Lake takes stage front and center with his well-known voice and sublime guitar playing, rocking out in this exquisitely filmed documentary taped in 2005 at the U.K.'s Shepperton Film Studios. It runs 50 minutes and everything is self-contained -- the interview footage and the rehearsals for the upcoming tour in one very exciting program. No "bonus tracks," no liner notes, but a dynamite package featuring David Arch's spacy keyboards, which give Rick Wakeman a good run for his money. There's mad lead guitar from Florian Opahle and cameras that treat the performances as if they are in front of 100,000 people. They're not, which makes for more contained filming that works to this project's advantage. Jai Ramage and Bekki Carpenter add unobtrusive backing vocals to tunes like "Farewell to Arms," and though Lake sounds like he's just warming up vocally, you have to take into consideration that it is a practice for an upcoming tour. A little snippet of "Lucky Man" is a tease, with nice faded color film creating an off-black-and-white effect. Most of the explosive workouts are in vibrant color and the interviews between songs work well, like a good PBS documentary. For fans of the Greg Lake Band and progressive rock fans in general, this is a real gem. ~ Joe Viglione
