Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Pullman, Eleventh Dream Day) is in love with his six-string bass--the same reason listeners are likely to be in love with this disc. FIELD RECORDINGS FROM THE COOK COUNTY WATER TABLE is gentle and beautiful post-rock (post-rock, the DMZ between indie-rock and contemporary instrumental), where the silence between the notes is as important as the notes themselves. With a focus on melody and mood rather than chops, McCombs delivers instrumental soliloquies that are both haunting and humble. Though the addition of sound effects (loons on one track, a train on another) might spell disaster in any other context, here they compliment the music in a wonderful way. With delicate and thoughtful contributions from Josh Abrams, Noel Kuppersmith, and others, plus a track sequencing that can't be beat, this recording is a joy from start to finish.
