In REVOLT, 3 Colours Red strikes a rich vein of strong and mature songwriting. This comes in effective contrast to the mischievous punk found 3CR's debut album, PURE. Pete Vuckovic and Chris McCormack make an effective composing duo, although Vuckovic alone can take the credit for the tough, string-laden ballad "Beautiful Day"-arguably the pick of the album. For the main part, though, power rock combines with infectious melodies and a refreshing lyrical directness. It's all done at a predominantly fast tempo, slowed only twice, and the wall-to-wall guitars should greatly please metal fans.
Dave Eringa, of Manic Street Preachers' production fame, helps with sound effects and layered production-heard at its best in "Song on the Radio". The opening three songs arguably contain the Colours' best output yet, with strong choruses and catchy hooks complemented by confident vocals and Eringa's layered sound. Unfortunately, following the release of REVOLT and the subsequent tour, it became "3 colours black". The band split, citing musical differences. REVOLT is a great record to end the first era, and fans of acts such as Terrorvision or Offspring need not hesitate.|
