ONE FOR THE ROAD compiles the results of two separate Willie Nelson/Leon Russell recording sessions. The first, featuring Willie's backing band, has the atmosphere of an informal jam session, with Nelson and Russell performing a wide range of country songs and standards. Both men ignored their own voluminous songwriting catalogues in choosing the material for this session, selecting instead such familiar chestnuts as "Don't Fence Me In," "You Are My Sunshine," "Heartbreak Hotel," and "Trouble In Mind," the last of which features a guest vocal by Maria Muldaur and a slide guitar solo by Bonnie Raitt. The second recording session was much more subdued, consisting almost exclusively of Willie's vocals and Leon's piano and electronic keyboard accompaniment. The material for these sessions is made up entirely of such standards as "Danny Boy," "Summertime," and "Stormy Weather." As a result, this CD plays like two separate, shorter discs, the first reminiscent of Willie's outlaw classics PHASES AND STAGES and RED HEADED STRANGER, the second closer in spirit to STARDUST.
