Slim Gaillard recorded a wealth of material and this series documents his work from the later' 30s on through the '40s. Over the course of 21 selections, Gaillard's joined by Howard McGhee, Scatman Crothers (on drums), Lucky Thompson, and Dodo Marmarosa, among others. Primarily duos and trios, there are also four numbers by "Slim Gaillard And His Orchestra"--a seven-piece ensemble.
Pianist Wini Beatty steps forward for the vocal on "That Ain't right, Baby", but elsewhere it's all Slim, full of his relentless invention and disarming friendliness. Gaillard is also a rare musician, loaded with chops and conviction on three instruments: piano, guitar, and vibes. Bob Hope makes an appearance, introducing a performance of Gaillard's classic "Chicken Rhythm" which was recorded live for a V-Disc during World War II. This historical series is timeless, essential listening.|
