The after-the-fact band name delivers both somewhat less and considerably more than it promises. Davis, three years after the BIRTH OF THE COOL sessions and two years before his critical breakthrough, was merely sitting in with the Lighthouse band, and in fact, appears only on impressive but not definitive runs through "Infinity Promenade," "'Round Midnight" and "Night In Tunisia." (However, his solos on the last in particular are sterling examples of cool melodic improvisation.)
The other two pieces are a stunning four-minute drum solo by the great Max Roach and a quartet version of "At Last" featuring Roach and the '50s' other greatest trumpeter, Chet Baker. Baker never "officially" recorded the tune, so its value lies not only in its rarity, but in its languid beauty and cool sophistication. This is an important release for not only Davis completists but all fans of west coast cool.
