Lee Hyla's In Double Light is collection of chamber works that are unified by their attention to melody and counterpoint. With the exception of Mythic Birds Of Saugerties, a jumpy solo bass clarinet piece based on the calls of various real and imaginary birds, every piece on In Double Light is based on free-sounding contrasting melodic lines. Sometimes they're pensive and delicate, as is the case with Ciao Manhattan. But more often, Hyla's melodies are rhythmically propulsive and they combine to form dense textures. Often, Hyla's energetic, jagged rhythms make his music sound like a group of free improvisers playing chamber music. It's easy to tell his pieces are through-composed, however, because they contain plenty of thematic unity and attention to form. ~ Charlie Wilmoth
