Cecilia Della Peruti spent many years cutting her teeth in studio and on the road with an array of accomplished songwriters including Beck and Charli XCX while gradually putting together her own material. Under the moniker Gothic Tropic, and following her 2011 EP Awesome Problems, she delivered her debut full-length in 2017. Composed of brightly colored melancholia, infectious pop hooks, and sleekly produced indie rock, the effort boasts a sound akin to Tango in the Night-era Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, and early HAIM. Album-opener "Stronger" consists of sweetly defiant lyrics and "oooh" harmonies that punctuate each chorus, all carried with rollicking, rigid basslines, while "Teenage Behavior" and "Don't Give Me Up" are new wave-influenced numbers with a sorrowful and yearning introspection. It's also quite clear just how eclectic Peruti's influences are -- the verses for "Your Soul" are made up of tightly executed guitar chords and ska-laden brass before segueing into a more languid tempo for its chorus, while mid-album instrumental "If It Had a Body" is akin to some of Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Fast or Feast is a solid album, delivering ten songs of ethereal and accessible pop/rock that manages to dip in and out of Peruti's vast array of influences without ever winding up as an obvious imitation of them; rather, they end up as a unique and thoroughly enjoyable record that is very much the sum of its parts. ~ Rob Wacey
