A fresh look at a familiar catalog, Bear Family's 2017 compilation Great Guitars at Sun shines a spotlight on the six-string shredders that came through the doors of Sam Phillips' legendary studio. Some often-anthologized classics are here -- Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," Elvis Presley's "Mystery Train," and Carl Perkins' "Matchbox," but nothing from Jerry Lee Lewis -- but the concentration on the guitar helps push some obscurities to the front, both in terms of artists (Edwin Bruce and Sammy Lewis make appearances here) and song selection (Warren Smith is here with "Miss Froggie" and "Got Love If You Want It," not "Ubangi Stomp," and there are alternate takes of Roy Orbison's "Ooby Dooby" and Billy Riley's "Red Hot"). This is by no means definitive, but hearing all the blues, country, and rock & roll guitarists bump into each other helps illustrate what a hotbed of talent Sun was. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
