Equal parts Sonny Sharrock spikiness and John Scofield fluidity, James Blood Ulmer was one of the most progressive guitar heroes on offer in the '80s, emerging from his work with Ornette Coleman as a jazz-funk-rock force with which to be reckoned. Later on he got the idea (not one of his best) that he should pursue blues playing and singing. While there are a couple of examples of that here, it's best when Ulmer lets his guitar do the talking, as on the expansive soundscapes of "As it Is" and the jazzy, mid-tempo "On and On." On funk-rock rave-ups such as "Pull on up to Love" and the closing tune "Home Alone," Ulmer makes it plain why he's often been dubbed a worthy successor to Jimi Hendrix, as his thick tone and wah-wah come boldly to the fore. Aided by such like-minded genre-bender as Bill Laswell, Amina Claudine Meyers, and Bernie Worrell, Ulmer serves up a rich sonic stew on BLUE BLOOD.
