Following his debut full-length King of Memphis and mixtape Rich Crack Baby, both of which appeared in 2016 and charted in the Billboard 200, Memphis-based rapper Young Dolph released the Gelato mixtape, his third consecutive charting album, in February of 2017. The release included "Play wit Yo' Bitch," a diss track aimed at fellow Memphis rapper Yo Gotti. Also included on Gelato are the single "Bagg" (featuring Lil Yachty) as well as guest appearances by Migos and Wiz Khalifa.

自前の帝国を拠点にハイペースなミックステープ攻勢によって着実にノシ上がり、昨年(2016年)は満を持してのオフィシャル作『King Of Memphis』を堂々のヒットに導いたメンフィス・ローカルの悪漢。本作はその勢いを受け継いだミックステープ扱いの新作だ。2チェインズ以降の粗削りな作法と落ち着き払ったヨレ声で仰々しく語りかけ、ジェラートばりに冷たいドープネスをひけらかす姿は風格十分だろう。すっかりミーゴスに仕切られる"Drop It Off"はご愛敬として、ウィズ・カリファやリル・ヨッティとの共演もありつつ、重厚な独り語りの基本軸を路上感たっぷりにブレなく貫いている。そうこうしてる間に2枚目の公式アルバム『Bulletproof』も配信リリースされたばかりだが、まずは今作の充実ぶりを堪能しておきたい。
