Melody Maker (11/1/97, p.46) - "...stirring stuff from one end to the other, never once vanishing up a dark hole or doing something for the sake of it. Instead it kicks out at the guidelines..."
NME (Magazine) (10/18/97, p.54) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Slater gets abstract without getting anal and hits the dancefloor without resorting to moribund stomp-alongs. It's as if Slater wishes to remind us just how fantastical techno can be."

Although Luke Slater had always trafficked in high-precision techno with emotion (just like his Detroit idols), Freek Funk is his most precise and emotional yet, quite experimental, and with a range of sounds from abrasive techno to ambient soundtracks and string-laden house. One of the few British producers who seems to realize that interesting sounds aren't quite as important as investing the music with spirit, Slater came up with one of the best techno LPs of the year. ~ John Bush
