This two-CD anthology is full of veterans active in jazz for four decades or more apiece, including Jon Hendricks, Kenny Burrell, Cedar Walton, Teddy Edwards, Al McKibbon, Pete Jolly, Ray Brown, James Moody, and Shirley Horn; it was recorded to honor their contributions as well as the memory of Harry "Sweets" Edison, Milt Jackson, and Joe Williams, all of whom passed away in the year prior to its release. The cast varies a good bit from track to track, but the performances are rarely anything other than first rate. Teddy Edwards' loping "Sunset Eyes" features him alongside fellow tenor saxophonist James Moody, while Moody's strutting quartet number "Last Train From Overbrook" and yet another reprise of his hilarious "Moody's Mood for Love," which also detours into a brief rap. Kenny Burrell is spotlighted on Percy Mayfield's "River's Invitation" while Ray Brown leads subdued trio arrangements of "Blue Monk" and "Memories of You." Jon Hendricks scats up a storm on his original "Cloud Burst" and has a nice ballad feature with Cedar Walton on "Last Night When We Were Young." Shirley Horn threatens to steal the show with a gut-wrenching rendition of "It Never Entered My Mind," though careless engineering on this track enables one to hear ever single smack of her lips, which proves very distracting. This one minor complaint shouldn't deter anyone from acquiring this highly recommended collection. ~ Ken Dryden
