For his third full-length as Appendix Out (a band name he would drop after this release), Alasdair Roberts deepened the Scottish neo-folk of his first two albums with darker atmospherics. With full band instrumentation providing a more ornate sound, Roberts and Co. mine goth-folk territory on such cuts as "Year Waxing, Year Waning," which features druidic style background chants. The stark, piano-centric title track and "Home (Bringing the Yearlings)"--among many others--foreground the modal, brogue-heavy vocal melodies that have earned Roberts the reputation as the Scottish answer to Will Oldham. Besides Appendix Out stalwarts like guitarist Gareth Eggle and drummer Tom Crossley, THE NIGHT IS ADVANCING features High Llama Sean O'Hagan and Hungarian bagpipe player Donald Lindsay.
