A fine tenor saxophonist who considers his main influences to be Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, John Doughten is also an excellent swing clarinetist and an occasional baritonist. On this set he is teamed with his longtime friend pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Phil Flanigan, and drummer Danny Burger. Together the quartet performs a dozen of Doughten's favorite standards, including swinging versions of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," "On the Alamo," "Let's Fall in Love" (his lone appearance on baritone), and "After You've Gone"; the latter is one of Doughten's three features on clarinet. The music is mainstream swing and very much in the Zoot Sims tradition. A Time for Love, which also includes some fine interpretations of ballads, is an enjoyable effort. ~ Scott Yanow
