There are some special moments on this set from multi-reedist Bill Easley, who is mostly heard here on clarinet and flute. With support from pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Victor Gaskin, and drummer Tony Reedus, Easley performs a particularly memorable set. Among the highlights are "Wind Inventions" (which has Easley overdubbed on a few clarinets and flutes), "Sticking" (a clarinet workout on "After You've Gone"), a rare uptempo version of "Come Sunday," Easley's fine clarinet on "All Too Soon," and a feature for his alto on "Waltz for the Ball," which is dedicated to Cannonball Adderley. Everything works and this date, Bill Easley's first as a leader, still ranks with his very best. ~ Scott Yanow
