This is one of the late Red Mitchell's more unusual recordings; although he sang and played piano on some of his other dates, this is the only release which exclusively features both without any sidemen or even his phenomenal bass! Ten of the eleven tracks are Mitchell's own and each has its own distinct character. The hilarious "Where's Don Ellis Now?" (a spoof of the late trumpeter's fondness for rather odd time signatures) should any jazz fan to explode into laughter; while the humor in "Foreigners" is a bit more subtle in a bluesy setting. "Love Is Not Only The Blues" is a touching ballad dedicated to his son, Allan. While these songs seem likely to lie in obscurity, they deserve to be heard; fans of Red Mitchell will definitely want to pick up this release. ~ Ken Dryden
