Let's get a couple things straight at the outset: "Dirty Water" notwithstanding, the Standells were from Hollywood, not Boston (producer/mastermind Ed Cobb claims he wrote "Dirty Water" as an ironic tribute after getting mugged in Southie.) And yes, the quartet featured both future Walker Brother Gary Leeds and former Mouseketeer Dick Dodd in its ranks in the early days. This excellent Sundazed reissue of their first album features not only that track, but more than a few other terrific raging snot-punk anthems, including "Medication," "Little Sally Tease," and "Why Did You Hurt Me." Other gems include bashing covers of the Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown" and Neal Hefti's "Batman" theme, alongside the umpteenth cover of the garage-rock anthem "Hey Joe." The four bonus tracks include the full-length version of "Rari," which for some reason was trimmed on the original LP. Garage rock fans need look no further.
