Sun Ra's prodigious output encompassed everything from high-octane swings and stomps to tribal chants, rhythmic tapestries, and open-ended tone poems. This album, comprised of sessions recorded in 1963, was originally released on Ra's own Saturn label, and impossible to find until its reissue on CD in 2000.
This set opens with a nearly six-minute-long fanfare: Marshall Allen's oboe and Walter Miller's trumpet are manipulated with tape delay by recording engineer (and Arkestra percussionist) Tommy "Bugs" Hunter, creating a sonic realm that's nicely captured in the title it was given, "Celestial Fantasy." This is followed by "The Idea Of It All," a gracefully propulsive work layered with Ra's angular chords and cascading horn lines. The title piece is a simple ballad softly rendered, as if fractured through a prism of color. The album has a clear identity of its own, as it mixes Sun Ra's compositions and scoring with a communal/interplanetary sensibility and a glorious handful of impassioned soloists.
