KE ELLINGTON, 1933-1935 is part of the extensive, multi-volume Classics Chronological series released by Classics Records. The album is one of the more interesting records in the series because it represents a significant step forward both in terms of Ellington's compositional maturity and the orchestra's ensemble playing. Where the previous volume is a pleasant and straightforward affair, here one can hear the Duke's later, wildly adventurous style beginning to take shape. Perhaps the most important difference between the music on DUKE ELLINGTON, 1933-1935 and that of its predecessors is Ellington's increasing emphasis on the enigmatic, highly stylised playing of several members of the orchestra, such as trumpeter Cootie Williams. The rhythmic complexity of several pieces on the disc also gives a hint of what was to come. In addition, perhaps because they sensed they were breaking new ground, the players themselves seem re-invigorated. Or, then again, maybe it was just the presence of Mae West at one of the sessions singing "My Old Flame!"|
