"Biophilia" literally means "love for life" and is the name of a biological hypothesis that states there is an instinctive bond between humans and nature. The album was partially recorded on an iPad and also released as a series of downloadable apps. 4年ぶりのニュー・アルバムは、〈バイオフェリア〉と銘打たれた壮大なプロジェクトの一環として作られたもの。このプロジェクトはアプリやウェブ、楽器の制作、さらには子供たちへの音楽教育など、さまざまな側面を持っていて、プロジェクトを通じて音楽と自然との関係を探っていくものらしい。そんななか、科学用語めいた曲名がずらりと並んだ本作は、音の教科書みたいな雰囲気に。大物ゲストはなく、使う音はシンプルに切り詰めて、ビョークはまるで実験室に一人でこもる錬金術師のように、ガムランやパイプ・オルガンといった生楽器と電子音を自在に組み合わせていく。プライヴェートな雰囲気のなか、生々しく響き渡る歌声はますますミステリアスだ。ビョークの音楽授業、受けてみたい。

Biophilia : Deluxe Version｜CDアルバム
音楽で化学変化を表現しようと試みた衝撃作。難しいことがわからなくても大丈夫、液体が固体に形を変える様子が屹度誰の頭にも浮かぶはず。一切の妥協がなくコントロールされた静謐でノイジーなメロディー。彼女のことを音楽だけで語るのはもったいないけれど、アルバム単体で考えると、整然とまとめ上げられた刺激的かつ孤高の名盤。
