That's why Real Gone's 2017 The Definitive Collection is so welcome: it is the first Anderson compilation to truly offer a thorough overview of her hitmaking peak. Originally released as a digital-only comp called The Essential Lynn Anderson in 2014, The Definitive Collection offers 40 singles, opening with 1966's "Ride, Ride, Ride" and closing with 1980's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues." In between those two songs come all of her country Top Ten hits -- "Rose Garden," to be sure," but its fellow number ones "You're My Man," "How Can I Unlove You," "Keep Me in Mind," and "What a Man, My Man Is" are all here, along with their Top Ten cousins. By sequencing these chronologically and going deep, The Definitive Collection winds up with a narrative, illustrating how Anderson drifted from the Nashville sound to easy listening by the end of the '70s, and by telling that story, this double disc lives up to its title's promise. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
