Joe Ascione: Allan Vache (clarinet); John Cocuzzi (piano, vibraphone); Frank Tate (bass instrument); Joe Ascione (drums).
Joe Ascione has been a fixture on the jazz party circuit, and the musicians who join him on these 2007 sessions -- including clarinetist Allan Vache, pianist/vibraphonist John Cocuzzi, and bassist Frank Tate -- have likely shared the stage with the drummer on numerous occasions. Ascione penned the upbeat, swinging blues riff "Movin' Up," a lighthearted tune that will get feet patting along with it. The leader also has some fun by combining the infrequently heard "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" (from the film Song of the South) with "I Got Rhythm," implied through Cocuzzi's striding piano and Tate's intricate bass, all powered by Ascione's crisp brushwork. The inspired combination of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" in a medley also works beautifully. Ascione adds a djembe drum to his arsenal for the calypso treatment of Cole Porter's "True Love" (one of his less frequently performed works), while the quartet incorporates a Latin tinge to a hip treatment of George Gershwin's "Summertime." Cocuzzi adds a friendly vocal in the bittersweet ballad "It Was a Very Good Year." The hilarious closer is the oldie "The Aba Daba Honeymoon," transformed by infusing it with a New Orleans second line rhythm. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden
