Principally recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. Originally released on RCA. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, Mellotron, Moog synthesizer); Earl Slick, Carlos Alomar (guitar); Roy Bittan (piano); Dennis Davis (drums); Warren Peace (background vocals). Audio Remasterer: Ray Staff. Recording information: Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California (09/1975-11/1975). Photographer: Steve Schapiro. Arranger: David Bowie. STATION TO STATION was the soundtrack to Bowie's nightlife. This time around he fashioned himself as the king of slick, the "Thin White Duke/Throwing darts in lover's eyes." This new persona enabled Bowie to show his sensual side and his affection for American soul music--something that would have seemed out of context on previous efforts. The album's smooth vibe is evident in the funky guitar of "Golden Years," and mixed with a dangerous charm and the "side effects of the cocaine" on "Stay." Bowie had miraculously done it again--he picked up a new musical identity, and molded it to perfection. STATION TO STATION was a refining period for Bowie. Gone was his other-worldly sexuality; The Thin White Duke was right here on Earth, no alien veneer, just a man completely run by his desires. It is then purely appropriate that the medium through which he expressed this lustful angle would be soul music. Carlos Alomar's biting guitar on "Golden Years" is straight out of the James Brown catalog, while the frantic drums and background vocals of "Stay" are pure strobe light disco.

Rolling Stone (4/11/02, p.107) - Ranked #21 in Rolling Stone's "50 Coolest Records" - "...A space-rock masterpiece..." Q (6/91) - 5 Stars - Indispensable - "sees the `Thin White Duke' staggering through a cocaine blizzard...but the delights of "Station To Station" suggest the walk he took on the wild side did him no creative damage." Uncut (p.110) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "STATION TO STATION may be the definitive LA album of the late 20th century: full of paranoid scheming and gnostic dread, the ghosts of Hollywood grandeur, the vampires of junk TV, romantic abjection and devotional desperation." Vibe (12/99, p.164) - Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century Pitchfork (Website) - "[STATION TO STATION] stands as his most immaculately constructed album, and the most important tactical transition in a career built upon aesthetic reinvention." Record Collector (magazine) (p.89) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "STATION remains a masterpiece. Bowie having fully harnessed his soul leanings on the previous year's YOUNG AMERICANS, while edging towards the new wave/avant-garde-isms of LOW."
