The Schramms are named for their founder, guitarist/singer/songwriter Dave Schramm, who was a member of Yo La Tengo and played with Chris Stamey, Kate Jacobs, Soul Asylum and Freedy Johnston. Their fifth album, ONE HUNDRED QUESTIONS maintains the high standard of their previous efforts: heartfelt, earthy roots-rock that keeps an introspective, personal focus while avoiding painful earnestness or blandness.
"Mary Come Lately," and the spooky ruminative ballad "I'll Believe," have a homey, loping sound that wouldn't be out place on early albums by the Band or Neil Young, yet there's also subtle use of distortion and noise that recalls Sonic Youth (in their quieter moments) and DJ Spooky. "Torn In Two" and "Simple Arithmetic" are rough-hewn, but not sloppy, mid-tempo rockers with folk and country undertones that find the band in Son Volt, early Jayhawks, and (yes, again) the Band territory. Schramm has a stinging, gently smoldering, emotional guitar sound, and keyboard player Andrew Harris Burton provides billowing cushions of Hammond B-3 organ. Background vocals come courtesy fellow travelers Syd Straw and Richard Buckner. ONE HUNDRED QUESTIONS is timeless, melodic rock & roll that could as easily have come from 1969 or 1979 as from 2000.
