The Turtles hit paydirt the first time out with a folk-rock arrangement of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and an album of Byrds-like versions of folk tunes and protest songs. But the protest trend died quickly, and as a band the Turtles weren't yet at the level of songwriting ability that was later to produce such gems as THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS and TURTLE SOUP.
As a result, YOU BABY sounds like a group casting about in search of a suitable new direction. The results are scattershot--one song, "Let Me Be," is actually repeated intact from the first album, and "Almost There" had previously been the flip of their debut single--but the best songs, like the terrific title track and "I Know You'll Be There," are among their finest work. Other songs, such as "Down in Suburbia" and "Pall Bearing Ball Bearing World," are interesting curios of the era.
