Released in 2013 by Rhino U.K., The Chic Organization: Up All Night was clearly timed to coordinate with the mainstream re-emergence of the great Nile Rodgers, whose role in Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" -- as well as the smash hit's parent album -- was crucial. This was issued at the same time as a set of similar length and look, parenthetically dubbed the Greatest Hits edition. The two sets share 20 cuts, ranging from Chic hits such as "Le Freak" and "Good Times" to outside productions for the likes of Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, and Carly Simon, as well as part of a shelved Johnny Mathis session (represented with the decent "I Love My Lady," not contained on The Chic Organization Box Set, released in 2010). The cuts here that are not on the Greatest Hits edition include Sister Sledge's "Frankie," the 12" version of Madonna's "Like a Virgin," Duran Duran's "Notorious," and the seven-minute "The Chic Mini Mix." Another cut not available on the other set is a 15-minute medley, recorded at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival, that incorporates "Let's Dance," "Like a Virgin," and "Notorious." While these volumes could be seen as opportunistic, a great deal of thought and love was put into them. ~ Andy Kellman
