The quirky electronics off set by high-pitched female vocals form only a part of the Japanese punk/noise/psychedelic scene fronted by bands like The Boredoms. Both The Boredoms' Yoshimi and Kim Gordon side project Free Kitten contribute their irreverent schtick here.
OOIOO is full of video game bleeps, oscillating blips, white noise, toy-like samples and the occasional squeaky scream. On "Right Hand Ponk," the band chants its own name, pronounced "ou ou ai ou ou," assisted by a driving beat and jaunty bass-like sounds. No recognizable instrument prevails in this psychedelic swirl until "In O," where an atonal guitar begins the dirge, followed by la's and da's, then whistling, set to a jamming beat. Odd ringing and clinking sounds interject while the vocals become lower, morphing into staccato Japanese. The song loops back into the original dirge and fades with interstellar samples and the reverberating words, "we go deeper down..." As the album continues, traditional instruments are more recognizable, and yells, throaty vocals, crashes, and pitch shifts descend from the ether. Intriguing.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
