本作は動く彫刻を作成する達人である英国人アーティスト、ポール・スプーナーの絵本「Moving Animals」からインスピレーションを受け制作されています。
ヨハネス・シュメーリングは、ふざけて転げ回ったり、無邪気に戯れたりするかわいらしい生き物の陽気さを自分の音楽の中に捉えることが魅力的な挑戦であると感じたとのこと。Tangerine Dreamでみられた叙情性やエモーショナルな要素は少なく、個性的なアヴァンギャルド感、ポップな感覚が前面に出たエレクトリカルな音像です。
時に東洋的な響きも感じさせる'The Woodpecker'、歪んだギターが特徴的な'The Wedding Cake'、1987年当時に生まれた息子に捧げた作品'The Zoo And Jonas'などが収録されています。

Johannes Schmoelling is an expert sound designer. On Zoo of Tranquility he uses his soundtrack experience (from his tenure with Tangerine Dream) to paint sonic pictures that are both playful and intimate. The animated sculptures of Paul Spooner inspired Schmoelling to create this album. His Berlin school electronica has symphonic and organic sci-fi textures. He toys with his listeners as he flits through and around the atmospheres. This reissue has two new tracks and the masters have been remixed. This disc will appeal to fans of Steve Jolliffe, Edgar Froese, Paul Haslinger, and Klaus Schulze. ~ Jim Brenholts
