Arranger: Mark Ayres.
Sci-Fi begins straightaway with a concert warhorse: John Williams' music from the original Star Wars trilogy, which, frankly, never does get tiring, especially the more delicate themes. The biggest problem here, in fact, may be that the ensemble used for the recordings seems to have been somewhat on the smaller side, even for the bigger and bolder themes. Still, the Prague Philharmonic gives a decent accounting of themselves throughout, with only some stiffness and the odd flub demonstrating that this isn't the Prague Philharmonic as it has come to be. Also visited in the course of the album are Total Recall, Predator, Dark Star, Starman, Gremlins 2, T2: Judgement Day, The Thing, Apollo 13, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Generations. It's a good, solid selection. The recordings themselves seem to have been compiled from different periods of the Prague Philharmonic's pre-1997 work (with electronic performances by Daniel Caine and Mark Ayres). The tracks have been encoded for Dolby Surround. The album is OK as is, but Silva has put out better science fiction and fantasy collections since this was originally released. ~ Steven E. McDonald
