Francesco Paolo Tosti was a prolific composer of popular songs in the Belle Epoque, and he established his career in Italy and later Great Britain, where he became a citizen and was knighted. Yet in spite of his large and impressive output, his songs are often relegated to the category of salon music and dismissed for their lightness and sentimentality. To put Tosti's songs in the proper context and to demonstrate his consistent artistry, Brilliant Classics has issued this five-CD set, the first volume in a series of the complete songs, in appealing performances by a variety of exceptional interpreters. Sopranos Romina Casucci, Maura Menghini, Valentina Mastrangelo, and Monica Bacelli, tenors Nunzio Fazzini, David Sotgiu, and Mark Milhofer, baritone Denver Martin-Smith, and pianists Marco Scolastra, Roberto Rupo, Isabella Crisante, and Antonio Ballista present 114 songs that range from the pleasant if slight L'Augurio to the harmonically subtle The Love That Came Too Late, and the program offers both Italian and English songs, along with a handful in French. This collection was issued in 2016 to mark the centenary of Tosti's death, and the quality of the performances will bring much needed attention to his neglected oeuvre.
