Along with Superchunk and Pavement, Washington D.C.'s Unrest were part of a triumvirate of bands that defined the indie-rock movement of the early 1990s. In the 1980s, the band released several singles, EPs, and albums on Teenbeat Records--the label owned and operated by Unrest frontman Mark Robinson--that displayed an archly haphazard but intelligent take on various underground pop and rock forms. That same sense of wry experimentation is present on the 1992 classic IMPERIAL F.F.R.R., but, thankfully, it exists more in service to the album's quirky pop brilliance than for its own sake. Following a 16-second test tone, the album blasts off with the hyperactive jangle pop of "Suki," which is then quickly countered by the slowly unfurling pop majesty of "Imperial." This ebb and flow between blistering guitar strum ("Sugarshack," "Firecracker," "Cherry Cream On"), stark melodic intimacy ("Isabel"), and musical irreverence--one that moves from the enchanting ("Champion Nines") to the challenging ("Firecracker")--makes for a curious yet deliciously satisfying listen.
