Miles Davis' response to that question was to abandon the format's structures and create a flowing, free-form style with a spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness feel. Al Green's answer was very much the same. In 1975, Green left behind the tight, meticulously-arranged style that made him an R&B hero to pursue a less corporeal muse. AL GREEN IS LOVE finds the singer jumping into his favorite song subject with both feet, almost to the point of obsession. The concepts of romantic, spiritual and physical love are fused into an organic whole, from the center of which Green emits reams of soulful, improvisatory luv-philosophy. An artist like Green is too naturally funky to let things drag, no matter how high-minded the proceedings, and cuts like "Oh Me, Oh My (Dreams In My Arms)" and "I Gotta Be More (Take Me Higher)" are propulsive and catchy, providing the perfect contrast to the delicate, contemplative mood of the bulk of the material here. By the end of this album, listeners should have little doubt as to the accuracy of its titular proclamation.
