前作『アートポップ』から3年、その間、2014年にはトニー・ベネットとデュエットしたジャズ・アルバム『チーク・トゥ・チーク』をリリース、2015年女優としての活動も活発となり、2016年第73回ゴールデン・グローブ賞にて"Best Performance By An Actress In A Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television"(ミニシリーズ・テレビ映画部門の最優秀女優賞)を見事受賞、さらに、ドキュメンタリー映画「ザ・ハンティング・グラウンド」用にレディー・ガガが制作した楽曲「ティル・イット・ハプンズ・トゥ・ユー」が、2016年アカデミー賞の"Best Original Song"(最優秀オリジナル楽曲賞)にノミネートされるなど、これまでの「派手なパフォーマンス」「奇抜なスタイリング」とは一変し、より洗練された"アーティスト"ミュージシャン"ヒューマン"としての活動が目立つ昨今、そうした様々な"変化"を経た"今のレディー・ガガ"が、今作には表現される。
