Ty England's connection to Garth Brooks is not a minor one. Originally college friends, England toured with the megastar for six years, honing a sturdy country foundation, which he'd already developed through his interests in the historical underpinnings of modern country music. So, while Ty is rooted in the dustbowl of Oklahoma and in the music of Hank Williams and Lefty Frizell, his connection with Brooks has taught him that one can remain true to one's roots and remain thoroughly contemporary.
On his self-titled debut, England takes control of songs and gives them authoritative deliveries--whether it's a traditional-to-the-core ballad like "It's Lonesome Everywhere" or a boot-scootin', rowdy rave-up like "A Swing Like That." No trad-based artist would have any credibility without featuring a song about "family," and Ty stays true to form: "New Faces In The Field" is a heartbreaking, sincere track about family land that changes owners. But England also likes to have fun, obvious through spirited material like "Redneck Son" and "Should've Asked Her Faster." Being a song interpreter, England gathers tunes from the best songwriters--including Hugh Prestwood, who contributes two gentle, literate ballads, "Smoke In Her Eyes" and "Should've Asked Her Faster."

While his voice hearkens back to classic honky tonk singers like Lefty Frizzell, Ty England's music falls halfway between Garth Brooks and Randy Travis, ranging from uptempo stomps to heartfelt ballads. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
