The Moonshine Cherrys play mainstream hard rock music, melodic with lots of electric guitar, in a time-honored style that ruled popular music until the rise of alternative rock in the 1990s. Singer/songwriter/bassist Ted Thompson (who seems to be in the process of changing his name to Ted Thomas, as both names are used on the CD) sings in an adenoidal tenor voice reminiscent of Rush's Geddy Lee (and, occasionally, the Small Faces and Humble Pie's Steve Marriott) about the wonders of his girlfriend ("My Marigold"), his determination to succeed ("For Crying Out Loud"), and the evils of greed ("Green"), among other topics. Like John Entwistle in the Who, he also plays far more than the roots of the chords, having to fill up the sound in this trio's arrangements. Except, of course, that perhaps the hardest thing to sell in today's pop music market is a new straight-ahead rock band, one would say that the Moonshine Cherrys have considerable commercial potential. At very least, their independently released debut album is available to fans of what was once the most widely heard style of music in the U.S. ~ William Ruhlmann
