Solo performer: Paul Bley (piano).
Recorded at Axis In Soho, New York, New York from July 1-3, 1977.
Paul Bley has recorded several solo piano albums over the decades. He has truly explored the solitary possibilities of the instrument and draws on a highly personalized set of approaches. This 1977 recording features three fairly short pieces (including George Gershwin's "Porgy") and Bley's own extended title composition. The latter piece serves as a fairly complete and powerful portrait of Bley's identity as an improviser. It opens with him plucking the strings inside the piano in counterpoint to ringing keyed notes in the bass register. This then gives way to a gorgeous melody that seems built on brevity as well as harmonic invention and surprise. Bley is occasionally labeled an avant garde pianist, but on closer inspection, the work is so rich with character that any such labels disappear to reveal music that is original, distinctive and wonderful.
録音 : ステレオ (Studio)
