『The Early Years』はロジャー・ウォーターズ、リチャード(リック)・ライト、ニック・メイスン、シド・バレットがロンドンの建築学校(リージェント・ストリート・ポリテクニック:現ウェストミンスター大学)で出会った頃から、シドが脱退し、デヴィッド・ギルモアが新たにラインナップに加わるまでのピンク・フロイドのストーリーを見事に時系列化、シングル「アーノルド・レイン」から20分という壮大な「エコーズ」までのサイケデリック・プログレッシヴ・ロックの誕生の歴史ともいえる。このバンドの進化を耳で体験し、彼らのごく初期の録音から、史上最大の売り上げを誇るアルバムのひとつである『狂気』に至るまでの間の、彼らの進化の過程と、彼らが文化の革新において果たした歴史を時代を追って探求することができる壮大なる歴史一大絵巻である。
