With this follow-up to the deliciously strange OEUVRE, Q-Burn rides more accessible genre music while managing to massage some real mileage out of his beats and synthesized, danceable chaos. The opening "He's a Skull" is hypnotic, drug-hazed trip-hop, accompanied by psychedelic synth buzzes, and a syrupy bassline. "Jennifer" makes a nice case for gently beguiling, contemporary electronica, with its softly detailed drum strokes, chiming organ, and cascading guitars.
But then get together with Q-Burn as he erects "New Patterns," five juicy minutes of downtempo techno that'll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up with its Luke Vibert-like synth crushes, thumping bass, and deep troughs of cool jazz. Groovy, baby.|

The proper debut by Donaldson's Q-Burns Abstract Message project is a bright spot for leftfield American electronica, easily comparable to more celebrated British producers from Orbital to the Chemical Brothers. Feng Shui is a bit more melodic and also more tied to Florida's breakbeat rave scene, but Donaldson ranges far and wide for his musical ideas, with nods to Latin, psychedelia, R&B and even Krautrock (the results of which include an unlikely Faust cover -- "Jennifer" from Faust IV -- that manages reverence for the original as well as a pioneering spirit of its own). Though worldwide listeners often look to Britain for full-length electronica odysseys, Feng Shui proves they're found all over. ~ John Bush
