One of the great jazz organist's finest latter-day albums, this 1980 recording finds Holmes ably bridging the gap between jazz and funk without sacrificing anything on either end. He incorporates the blues/jazz approach of Jimmy Smith (to whom he always deferred) with his own very progressive approach. Throughout BROADWAY, Holmes' notorious left hand races like a demon, producing bass lines so funky and harmonically sophisticated, you'd swear there was a bassist on the session (there is, he just happens to be an organist). Holmes leaves plenty of room for guitarist Gerald Smith to take the spotlight on the breathlessly percolating title tune while he lays down a furious rhythmic bed. "Ode to Larry Young" is Holmes' tribute to the late organ pioneer he referred to as the Coltrane of the organ, but the typically individualistic Holmes doesn't try to emulate Young's sound. Houston Person's thick, bluesy tone lends a consistently jubilant feel to the proceedings, harking back to the days of Holmes' erstwhile collaborator Gene Ammons.
