This collection from 32 Records compiles two of Kenny Barron's mid-'70s records, SUNSET TO DAWN and GOLDEN LOTUS, for the Muse label. The first session is a very adventurous outing for Barron, who spends a lot of time on the Fender Rhodes piano, surrounded by a bevy of percussionists. Like many artists, Barron was exploring the new electronic age of the '70s here, and pulled out some creative keyboard work. However, he shines on acoustic piano on the exceptional solo cut "A Flower," the burning bopper "Al-Kifha," and the gentle waltz "Delores Street S.F." The second disc is a more traditional set with Barron on piano throughout. Highlights include appearances by saxophonist John Stubblefield and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Featuring material in Barron's customary style, this is certainly the more palatable of the two sessions, from challenging Latin grooves such as the opening title track and the bouncing "Cinco," to Barron's stunning solo venture on the standard "Darn That Dream."
